Every July, millions of people across the globe take part in Plastic Free July – a month-long challenge to reduce single-use plastic and make more sustainable choices in our everyday lives. Whether you’re an eco-warrior or just starting your sustainability journey, Plastic Free July is a great opportunity to become more aware of how much plastic we use – and how we can use less of it.
What is Plastic Free July?
Plastic Free July is a global movement that began in Australia in 2011 and has since grown into one of the world’s most influential environmental campaigns. The idea is simple: to encourage people to avoid single-use plastic throughout the month of July – and hopefully beyond.
The challenge can be as big or as small as you like. From refusing plastic straws to finding plastic-free bathroom products, every change helps.
Why does it matter?
Plastic pollution is one of the biggest environmental issues facing our planet. Around 300 million tonnes of plastic are produced each year – and at least 8 million tonnes end up in our oceans. It harms wildlife, contributes to climate change, and takes hundreds of years to break down.
By choosing to reduce our plastic use, we can:
- Protect marine life and ecosystems
- Reduce the demand for new plastic production
- Support a more sustainable, circular economy
How to get involved
You don’t need to overhaul your entire lifestyle to take part in Plastic Free July – small changes really do add up. Here are a few simple ideas to get started:
- Ditch plastic bottles – use a reusable water bottle
- Say no to plastic bags – carry a reusable tote
- Choose loose fruit and veg – avoid unnecessary packaging
- Swap cling film for beeswax wraps
- Use bars of soap and shampoo instead of bottled versions
If you’re a business, you can also join in by:
- Reviewing your packaging
- Encouraging staff to bring in reusable cups/lunch containers
- Hosting a plastic-free challenge in the workplace
- Sharing your efforts on social media to inspire others
Be part of the solution
Plastic Free July isn’t about being perfect – it’s about making better choices where we can. Even one small change is a step towards a cleaner, greener future. Whether you’re reducing your plastic use for the first time or building on changes you’ve already made, now is the perfect time to get involved.
