Did you know the UK’s beloved hedgehog is now officially vulnerable to extinction? These charming garden visitors are disappearing fast—but one charity is working hard to change that.

The British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS), founded in 1982, is the UK’s only organisation solely dedicated to hedgehog conservation. From raising awareness to influencing government policy, BHPS is making a real difference.

What They Do
• Hedgehog Awareness Week (every May) encourages simple actions like creating ‘hedgehog highways’ in garden fences.
• Their Hedgehog Street campaign—run with PTES—empowers communities to make gardens and neighbourhoods hedgehog-friendly.
• They provide education, support rescue centres, and lobby for stronger protection in planning and development.

How You Can Help
• Leave a wild corner in your garden.
• Avoid using slug pellets and other harmful chemicals.
• Create small holes in fences to help hedgehogs roam freely.
• Support BHPS through membership, donations, or by spreading the word.

The British Hedgehog Preservation Society is a beacon of hope for one of Britain’s most iconic animals. With your help, we can keep their snuffles and shuffles part of our natural soundscape.

Found a Hedgehog in Trouble? Here’s What to Do
Hedgehogs are one of the UK’s most loved garden visitors, but they often face serious dangers—especially during colder months or in urban areas. If you find a hedgehog that looks like it might need help, here’s a simple guide to doing the right thing.

When to Step In
A hedgehog may be in trouble if:
• It’s out in daylight (especially during cold months).
• It looks injured, wobbly, or very small.
• It’s bleeding, has flies/maggots, or is cold to the touch.
• It’s a tiny hoglet seen alone, or weighs under 450g (1lb) in autumn/winter.

First Steps: Keep It Safe and Warm
• Gently pick it up using gloves or a towel.
• Place it in a cardboard box lined with a soft towel.
• Add a hot water bottle wrapped in a cloth—warmth is essential.
• Offer a small dish of water and some wet cat or dog food if the hedgehog is active.

Get Expert Help
Don’t try to treat the hedgehog yourself. Contact a rescue centre for advice:
• British Hedgehog Preservation Society Helpline: 01584 890801
• Or search helpwildlife.co.uk/map to find a local wildlife rescuer.

Important Reminders
• Never feed hedgehogs milk – it can make them very sick.
• Do not release the hedgehog unless a wildlife expert says it’s safe.
• Even if it looks healthy, it may need professional care.

With just a few simple steps, you can save a hedgehog’s life. Share this info with friends and family—and help protect one of Britain’s most treasured wild animals.
