You might be alone at Christmas for different reasons, such as the death of a loved one, living far from relatives, or you don’t have close relationships with family or friends. Loneliness at Christmas can be particularly hard.
You can find things to do at Christmas that make you feel less alone, especially if being alone isn’t how you thought you’d spend Christmas.
Perhaps you are alone this year because you turned down invitations. Know that it’s ok to call those people back and say “yes”. This is often a problem for those that feel like you are going to be a burden – you turn down invitations only to regret it and feel lonely afterwards. Know that you are wanted very much at someone’s table if they have invited you; it’s because they want you there, not because they feel obliged.
Maybe your family or loved ones live far away and seeing them just isn’t an option. What can you do to stop feeling lonely? Here are a few suggestions:
- Watch a good film or two.
- Remember you don’t have to celebrate – its ok to sit down with your favourite food, a few snacks and a dinner of your choice. It doesn’t have to be fancy, as long as it’s what you enjoy.
- If you are able to, go for a walk in your local area.
- Treat yourself to something nice – even if it’s some socks or slippers.
- Read a book or listen to an audio book.
- Get those cassette tapes out and listen to your favourite music.
- If you have access to the internet, look for things to do in 2023 – whether it be joining groups, coffee mornings or church activities in your local area.
- Plan your day to the fullest – do all the things you love all in one day. It’s just a day, make it one that you enjoy.
